Due to this demographic change in our public school system, especially in California, our educational system NEEDS to find different ways of accommodating students who are English language learners, low income/under-resourced, and students of color who come from immigrant-family backgrounds. Many times, speaking from personal experience, our experience as students of color is often unknown, marginalized and obscured due to a system that often favors white students through different educational mechanisms. We need CHANGES in teachers (we need more bilingual and teachers of color); changes in our curriculum (we need more BOOKS that speak to OUR richly-diverse cultures); changes in standardized testing; and, changes in the treatment of marginalized communities! I am feeling hopeful that this demographic change can possibly push forward an agenda of equality not only in my home--Napa Valley-- or California, but in the entire nation!
