During World War Two, numerous reconnaissance aircraft operated from Malta. Indeed, photographic reconnaissance of the central Mediterranean was the responsibility of Malta-based aircraft from 1940 till the end of 1942. Their main task was to cover a vast expanse of sea, seeking out convoys, or photographing ports from where they were about to set sail. These aircraft contributed to the daring and succesful raid on Taranto, carried out by the Fleet Air Arm on the night of 11th-12th November 1940, by carrying out the reconnaissance of the Italian naval base as a preliminary to the attack.
