During down time at work, I enjoy gonging out and watching fore videos on youtube and Statter911 and the like. I watch them to watch them, not to bash and pick them apart like the throngs of armchair ICs out there. many times I wish I was on scene because it looked like a fun job. Many times I see a ladder truck, be it a quint or true ladder with the ladder still bedded. Honestly, it drives me nuts. Why bother buying or dispatching a truck if it will not be utilized? Today i watched a good video of a REAL good job. Doesnt matter where or who. 3 story wood frame, VERY heavy smoke, fire out the exposure 2 side on the top floor. There was a stick parked an apparatus length from the front of the building with the aerial bedded. This house was begging for the roof to be opened. I wished I was there. Plenty of work for everyone! There were overhead wires on the curbside, but they could have been easily overcome by spotting the truck in front of the building and even beaching it halfway onto the sidewalk. In my opinion collapse was not an immediate threat and it would have been safe. Even with the fire showing out a window on the exposure 2 side, it was apparent given the smoke that this was a self vented doesnt mean adequately vented situation. Also, the fire is telling you where to open the roof - so SPOT THE TURNTABLE to the exposure 2 side. This is vital - SPOT THE TURNTABLE, not the cab. You have the device - use it. Practice with it. Get used to spotting the turntable to your target. Its important for everyone else to know that the address belongs to the truck, but it is more important for the truck to know precisely where they need to park. And dont get out till the parking brake is set.
