During lunch with a friend yesterday, the conversation led to a discussion about a local non-profit organization that is doing some wonderful work in the world. My friend had some strong opinions about the founders of the company and how she doesnt like or support the organization because its managers have millions of dollars and a private jet. I was confused, really, because I dont see how any of that negates all the good work that they do. She said, Well, it doesnt.. but they can do so much more if it wasnt for that! and it dawned on both of us that she was so wrapped up in how much they werent doing, she completely dismissed all the fantastic work they continually do, and all the people whose lives they enrich on a daily basis. Ive seen this happen before, when people jump down my throat for quoting Mother Teresa, for example, because she may or may not have done some shady stuff (as if any of it, no matter how bad, negates the wonderful things that she has done). This is also the case with Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, and so on... but it begins within. It begins with looking at the whole picture instead of picking things apart and focusing on the negative. If thats our behavior patter, then were not far from someone saying to us Its a beautiful day! and we reply Well, it COULD be nicer!... seriously??? An attitude of gratitude is the key to happiness, my friends. Zoom out.. look at the big picture, okay? Its a beautiful world we live-in. Period.
