During my dental checkup today the hygienist asked about hobbies. After I told her I play clarinet (and that I had been in a college marching band) she mentioned that her son plays bass clarinet in his HS marching band at Shorewood and that he enjoys it. Then she wondered if hed keep marching with it once he gets to college. I told her if he specializes on bass clarinet hell likely play in orchestra or wind ensemble. Generally speaking, college bands like HMB just use a regular clarinet. To which she was surprised. Two things I took away: 1. Dental hygienists will talk about any subject while they are working on your teeth. 2. Telling someone you play clarinet invariably causes them to mention that they/family member/friend also plays clarinet. In other words, an instant conversation starter- which is fine if you arent in the midst of teeth cleaning. (The examination went great, BTW. My teeth are in excellent shape.)
