During the First World War, military units adopted animal mascots - TopicsExpress

During the First World War, military units adopted animal mascots to identify themselves, including goats, dogs and birds. Many soldiers also kept pets near the front line trenches, most often small dogs and cats, which helped the soldiers normalize the harsh world of trench combat. The most famous Canadian mascot was a black bear cub named Winnipeg. Placed in the London Zoo rather than subjected to the rigours of the front, Winnie delighted thousands of visitors to the zoo, later becoming the inspiration for A.A. Milne’s famous character Winnie-the-Pooh. Find out more about animals in the First World War via the link below. #StrongProudReady #RememberThem Content courtesy of the Canadian War Museum
