During the Great Recession, nearly all states cut funding for public higher education. As the recovery takes hold, 42 states have begun restoring some of the lost funding. Not in NC. We are one of 8 states that continues to cut our public university and community college systems. In fact we imposed the fourth largest cut in the nation last year. Why? Were not in a recession. Its because the legislature would rather provide tax giveaways to extremely wealthy people who dont need them rather than invest in the future of our young people and our state. These facts come from a recent national report that highlights the damaging impacts of these cuts -- higher tuition which hurts middle class and working families, fewer educational opportunities and services, and harmed long-term economic competitiveness. The report includes the following NC-specific facts: *Public colleges and universities have cut faculty positions, eliminated course offerings, closed campuses, shut computer labs, and reduced library services, among other cuts. For example, since 2008, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has eliminated 493 positions, cut 16,000 course seats, increased class sizes, cut its centrally supported computer labs from seven to three, and eliminated two distance education centers *The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has eliminated 493 positions, cut 16,000 course seats, increased class sizes, cut its centrally supported computer labs from seven to three, and eliminated two distance education centers. *In the 2014 academic year, funding cuts led North Carolina State University to eliminate 187 full-time equivalent positions while the NCST Library system will need to eliminate 27 positions and a reduction in an online media service.
