During the formative years, of the Bethel Middle School, The Guidance Department consisted of Mrs Gail Morris and Mr Robert Appicelli. At that time, which counselor you saw depended on gender. Being innovative Mrs Morris and Mr Appicelli would take on any student regardless of gender, depending on the situation. Both Counselors retired in the 1990s. Mrs Morris relocated to California. Mr. Appicelli remained in CT. He was also active in the Navy Reserve, where he retired as a Captain, a four striper. A Naval Captain is equal to a full bird Colonel in other branches. After Mrs Morris and Mr Appicelli retired, BMS went through many counselors. At times there were no male counselors on staff, so some male senior staff volunteered to mentor students during these difficult times. Being a middle schooler isnt easy, so not having a Guidance Staff without at least one male counselor isnt acceptable. In todays world, Guidance works by grade, but not having the option to use another gender counselor is unacceptable. Fortunately most staffs allow for this option today.
