Dyslexia Inclusion Award Bideford College have just been awarded Devon’s prestigious Dyslexia Inclusion Award. Bideford is one of a small number of secondary school in the county to gain this significant Award representing the culmination of two years dedication and hard work by all of the staff at the College, led by Sarah Bourke The Award aims to recognise good and outstanding practice that promotes literacy development across the whole college and meets the literacy needs of all students, some of whom may have dyslexia, through high quality inclusive teaching and targeted support. The Award process saw the College undertaking an audit of their provision and practice, and working with LA advisers and specialist teachers to develop the key areas identified. This was evaluated through a school presentation to an expert panel, scrutiny of evidence and a day spent in school observing lessons and talking to students and staff. The SEN team at Bideford received particular praise for their “passionate commitment to broadening the life chances of all the students in the school, by their determined efforts to meet their students’ varied emotional and social, physical and learning needs”. Also praised was the high standard of inclusive whole class teaching and the teaching staff who used effective teaching strategies and aids to support dyslexic students
