EAC Forum on Mutual Recognition Agreements for Professional Services; 31st July to 2nd August 2013, Red Court Hotel, Nairobi- Kenya The East African Business Council (EABC), through the East African Professional Services Platform (EAPSP) and with the cooperation of the EAC Secretariat, has organised an EAC Forum on Mutual Recognition Agreements(MRAs) for Professional Services. The forum is supported by the African Capacity Building Foundation, Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). OBJECTIVE The objective of the conference is to bring together professionals in a collegian environment to discuss and share experiences with MRAs; what they are, why they might be relevant, their potential value, the process of negotiations, steps to success, possible pitfall and so on, to share information and best practices, learn from one another and explore possibilities for collaboration and engagement. Specifically, the conference aims to: a. Train professionals on negotiations and implementation of MRAs; b. Identify and present best practices in negotiating and implementing MRAs, in order to derive lessons learnt from existing MRAs, by examining successes, difficulties and challenges of negotiations, implementation, management, monitoring and assessment of MRAs; c. Provide a platform where professions interested in negotiating MRAs can identify requirements and needs to negotiate and develop MRAs for their respective sectors, start discussions on negotiating MRAs with their counterparts and, where possible to agree on and develop the agenda and roadmap for negotiating MRAs in the respective professional services sectors; OUTPUTS a. Professionals are trained on MRAs, their potential benefits and applicability to their sectors; d. Professionals derive lessons from the successful MRAs negotiated as well as from experiences from difficulties and challenges of implementation, management, monitoring, assessment and so on to share their experiences; e. Professionals are given the opportunity and facilitated to develop the agenda and road map for engagement, collaboration and negotiations with their counterparts. OUTCOMES It is envisaged in the mid-term the conference will stimulate the conclusion and implementation of more MRAs resulting in enhanced free movement of services and workers in the EAC.
