EARRACH SONA DUIT! … Happy Springtime! If anyone’s looking for a cheery Springtime desktop wallpaper, I’m using this one and it makes me smile every day when I switch on the computer. When I switched on this morning, Google was there with a very cute visual announcing the first day of Spring. In fact, here in Ireland, the first day of Spring was officially 1st February. The Irish year calendar developed during Irelands Gaelic era and it’s still used in modern Ireland to define the beginning and length of the day, the week, the month, the seasons, quarter days, and festivals. Like elsewhere, the modern Irish calendar begins on 1 January, whereas the ancient Celtic year began on 1 November. The seasons in Ireland today still follow the ancient Celtic tradition, which is based solely on daylight and the strength of the noon sun, and our seasons are … Winter - November, December, January Spring - February, March, April Summer - May, June, July Autumn - August, September, October Historical texts suggest that, during Irelands Gaelic era, the day began and ended at sunset. Through contact with the Romans, the seven-day week was borrowed by continental Celts and then spread here to Ireland. Whatever your first day of spring is, it doesn’t matter. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere at least, there’s finally light at the end of what’s been for most of us the long dark tunnel of Winter. It’s onwards and upwards from here on in. Hoo-feckin-ray! :-) (M)
