EBOLA IN NIGERIA: EVIDENCES IN CONTAINMENT ABOUND. Its been 28 days since the merchant of Ebola, Patrick Sawyer first brought the virus to Nigeria and 23 days since he passed on. About 11 persons were directly infected by him and going by the 2-21 days incubation period, its not likely that there would be further report of direct infection of more of those who contacted his living body or his corpse. He was cremated (burnt to ashes) under Word Health Organization protocol for disposal of such dangerous wastes. I hope his ashes have been mailed to his shameless wife in the USA who had the shameless effrontery to say that she knew that her rogue husband had fled to Nigeria because he couldnt trust the Liberian health system. The fool conveniently forgot to inform the world who gave him the referral, to which hospital and why since we didnt have Ebola and were not even prepared for it. In one of my recent posts, I had opined that Ebola has become dead on arrival in Nigeria because of the strong determination by the Nigerian people led by their governments to ensure that we didnt succumb to the epidemic. Even the scare created by the misinformation by the Minister of Information the same day didnt sway my feeling that we would be able to contain it. Thank God that the Minister of Health promptly cleared the air about the 21 infections recorded in Enugu, a day after. Nigerians love good lives and would do everything to live and enjoy their lives. Thats why we were able to contain the HIV/AID scourge and recorded one of the lowest numbers of victims in relation to our population. We didnt only adhere to government advises but even added our own safety codes: • Faith based healing centers like TB Joshua etc asked Ebola patients to stay back in their countries. • Many families withdrew their people from crowded events. • Both Catholic and Anglican churches stopped handshake of peace rituals and direct mouth administration of holy communions during church services. • Handshaking, a Nigerian socialization custom, just had to be put in abeyance. Those who instinctively shake others try to wash their hands immediately. • Many including yours truly started carrying hand sanitizers around outside from the office and house arrangements. • Many people stopped eating bush meat of any sort not minding that bats, guerillas etc are most dangerous. • I should also think that certain intimacies engaged in by many youths should be on the very low side (Ebola is not HIV that can linger for years - who won die now now?). • Taxi drivers are now not ready to carry either very sick people or corpses. No matter the allure of good pay. Now, the fear is getting infected from those that were infected by the index case. So far, there is no confirmation that there is secondary infection from the primary infection and the statistics though regrettable are still heart warming (knowing that we have about 160 million that can be infected). The stats: 1. 11 Nigerian confirmed infections. 2. Three Nigerian deaths (May their souls rest in peace). 3. Fatality rate so far is 27% (African average is above 70%). 4. First Ebola patient has been discharged from hospital meaning she is free. Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah. 5. Five patients are showing signs of complete recovery. Glory!! 6. 189 people are under surveillance in Lagos and 6 in Enugu. This is because they had contacts with Ebola patients but have not shown any sign to necessitate being quarantined. 7. The husband of the nurse who escaped to Enugu has been quarantined not because he has shown any sign but because he had had intimate contact with his Ebola infected wife (as in- man no be wood - Eyaa! - was his food contaminated also?) 8. Many of those under watch would soon be released if they dont show signs after 21 days of coming into contacts. The bad news is that although we have the Nano Silva supplement that was touted to be a cure for Ebola here, its use has not been cleared by the National Health Research Ethics Committee. Finally, I have read a popular Pastor (name withheld) quoting profusely Psalm 91 to reassure the faithful. My advise is that the faithful should also read the temptation of Jesus and how the devil quoted the same Psalm 91 and how Jesus countered him by quoting Deuteronomy 6:16. We should have faith but know it that testing of God starts where faith ends. I remember one advise by a man of God in this forum heavens help those that help themselves. Ka Chineke mezie okwu!
