EDUCATION – Planning Permission Granted for Sustainable Classroom Extension. Russen & Turner Architectural Design are pleased to announce Planning Permission has been granted for the construction of a new classroom block which replaces an out-of-date prefabricated classroom for a West Norfolk School. The proposed scheme has been designed to be sympathetic with the surrounding buildings with careful consideration given to the building materials. This includes the use of vertical fixed western red cedar boards with a slate covered mono-pitched roof. Visible gutters and downpipes are avoided to promote a contemporary, unfussy appearance with emphasis on strong vertical and horizontal lines. Internally, the learning environments are adaptable and include free-flow areas with a direct link to an outdoor play area. This is further supported with the introduction of windows of varying sizes and heights enabling children to take advantage of the views to the adjacent garden. The design compliments the Department for Educations measures to reduce energy consumption, costs and carbon emissions by way of embracing cost-effective sustainable development which in turn creates a low-maintenance child-friendly environment.
