EFL umpire Kat performing med ball toss for height or keg toss (without a keg obviously!). Med ball tossing is an excellent tool we use at WSSC to train max velocity and low-load power for our athletes. They can be used in a number of ways with a number of drills, and with a range of loading parameters (usually between 6-12kg) depending on the strength of the athlete. Usually used for explosive hip extension/triple extension, they can be modified to serve a range of purposes. Examples of med ball toss variations include - underhand toss for height (video) - underhand toss for distance forward -underhand toss for distance reverse (over the head) - rotation throw into wall (great for kinetic chain patterning and power in striking sports!) - med ball slams (triple flexion) - seated med ball horizontal toss (upper body power) And the list goes on Med ball tossing is EASY to coach and a great tool when there is limited time spent with the athlete and it is impractical to spend time learning Olympic lift variations or more technical barbell lifts. Utilise med ball tosses in your training or with your clients/athletes and see the difference !! If you want a science based approach to your training, contact WSSC NOW via info@woodfordssc otherwise dont be shy to shoot us a private message on FB! Coach JP
