This incident really happened. The names are changed to avoid embarrassing any one in this story, but it illustrates the potential for violence at any moment that flat-landers often remark on and the wicked subtle humor that they never seem to get. In 1977 I was in a car with two close friends who were brothers who were driving me to Big Rock after a party at their place above the coke ovens had turned into a monopoly game/sleepover. We passed Looneys Creek and Joe floored it on the big straight stretch like any self respecting teen driver back then and we were flying. As the tight curve at the end approached , we slowed down and a car with two people in the front seat coming up at us was a little bit in our lane. We had a near miss and Bill, the younger brother gave them the finger! Fifteen years old and as game as they come, he was! We continued toward Big Rock but by the time we were near the Weller Yard bridge the other car was on our bumper, blowing the horn and flashing their lights. We pulled over on the side of the road at the wide spot where the road forked to Home Creek. I was asked to sit out the confrontation by Joe as it was to be a two on two discussion and Bill had not yet been in a roadside fracus. The two strangers got out and came toward us. The driver said angrily I dont appreciate you giving us the finger! Joe replied, I dont APPRECIATE you driving in my lane! The passenger, a mountain in jeans, army field jacket and toboggan had got out now and was moving forward menacingly. The driver said, I think I will just kick your ass then Joe said I dont think you are ready to talk like that.Maybe I need to help you get things figured out. Come closer and Ill work on that head a little. Bill couldnt take the tension any more and moved toward the passenger. YEAH he shouted, and Ill stomp a mud hole in your fat buddys ass ! The stranger, in a cold brittle voice said, Thats. My. Wife. A short moment of silence ended with both brothers looking sheepish and saying Damn, Mr. Were sorry. Everyone got back in their cars and went our separate ways. The stranger may have thought he had been given an apology, but it was sympathy they had offered!
