EKSG APPROVES INJECTION OF N115MILLION INTO COMMERCIAL AGRICULTURE SCHEME Ekiti state government has approved the clearing of 500 hectares of land for farm cultivation by youths in the state at a sum of N115Million as part of efforts to boost the state’s Youth Commercial Agriculture Development Scheme (YCAD). The State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Tayo Ekundayo who made this known in Ado Ekiti while briefing the Press on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, said that another sum of over N50million was also approved to procure fire fighting equipment and accessories to ensure rapid response and prompt intervention against fire disasters in the state. Mr. Ekundayo reiterated the commitment of the Fayemi led administration for the safety of lives and property of the people stressing that employment generation for its teeming youths is also a top priority for the government. The Commissioner explained that government gesture was to engender its Youth Empowerment Drive and guarantee the safety of lives and property of the people through effective intervention in event of fire incidents. Stressing that the state government was passionate about improving the living standard of the people in the state particularly the youths, Ekundayo said that the YCAD programme would be constantly reviewed to accommodate more interested and qualified beneficiaries. He said that the impact of commercial farming in the state would soon be felt across the country going by the pace of commercialization of agriculture by the state government through YCAD and other complementary programmes. I can assure you that Ekiti will soon become the food basket of western Nigeria and beyond. This administration is desperate and passionate about improving the living standard of these teeming Ekiti youths. Practically, these youths are being assisted with the needed aids that would ensure they are placed on higher pedestal than their counterparts in the other sectors of the economy, he affirmed. Mr Ekundayo added that the agric programme will also increase the IGR and boost the overall development of the state. He enjoined youths in the state to make use of the employment opportunities provided by the government through the YCAD scheme anxious other agricultural initiatives to promote their future. Charging people in the state to be security conscious and shun any act that may lead to fire outbreaks, the Commissioner assured that government would leave no stone unturned to guarantee the safety of lives and properties adding that the present administration would maintain the prevailing peace in the state. We are not resting on our oars. This is a peaceful government. We want to ensure that the peace and safety of our people are guaranteed. From now, what you should expect is better service delivery and more impactful intervention. The assurance we are giving you is that fire outbreak will no longer be a threat to the lives and property of our people, he said. Ekundayo assured that the Fayemi administration would keep on initiating people oriented programmes that would continue to have direct impact on the people in the state. EKHA COMMITS ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, COLLEGE OF AGRIC BILLS TO APPROPRIATE COMMITTEES FOR FURTHER ACTIONS Ekiti State House of Assembly has committed two bills to appropriate committees for further legislative actions. The bills are Ekiti State College of Technical and Commercial Agriculture Bill, 2013 and Ekiti State Administration of Criminal Justice Bill, 2013. The House at its plenary in Ado Ekiti mandated its Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters to work on the administration of criminal justice bill while Committee on Education has the mandate to work on the College of Technical and Commercial Agriculture bill. The two bills were among the recent nine executive bills presented to the Assembly for approval. The Technical and Commercial Agriculture Bill seeks to establish a College of Technical and Commercial Agriculture in the state while the Administration of Criminal Justice Bill is aimed to reform administration of criminal justice in Ekiti State. The Majority leader of the House, Hon. Churchill Adedipe who moved the motion for the committal of the two bills after a thorough debate on them by the lawmakers, said they were aimed at enhancing democracy and good governance in the state. CHAIRMAN LGSC ASSURES LG STAFF OF UN-INTERUPTED PAYMENT OF SALARIES. The Chairman of the Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Chief Ranti Adebisi has assured Local Government staff in the state that there would be no interruption in the payment of salaries of authentic staff of the Local Governments. Chief Adebisi who gave this assurance at a forum in Ado Ekiti, said that the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have been advised to work with the Local Government Caretaker Chairmen, the Director of Finance and Accounts towards achieving correct nominal roles. The Chairman stressed the need to ensure that no worker’s name is missing in the nominal roles, emphasizing that no name that cannot be accounted for should also be in the staff seniority list. Noting that government has paid the 2013 leave bonus of all staff of the Commission, he assured that arrangements were in top gear to pay the leave allowance of other local governments’ staff before the end of the year. Chief Adebisi explained that in the quest to achieve a transformed service delivery commission that will effectively boost development at the grassroots, government has approved the creation of the department of Special Duties at the LGSC that will help the commission discharge its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). EKITI TO CELEBRATE COOPERATIVE DAY ON NOVEMBER 30. The maiden edition of the Ekiti State Cooperative Day Celebration will hold on Saturday, November 30, 2013. According to a release from the Office of the State Commissioner for Rural Development and Community Empowerment, the event which is slated to hold at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti will be presided over by the State Governor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi . The release stressed that the programme was in recognition of the important roles Cooperative Societies play in the economy of the state. Noting that Cooperative Societies was the second major employer of labour in the state and a veritable platform for members to expand their businesses through the provision of micro credit facilities to their members, the release added that the celebration would further give recognition to the Cooperative Societies in the state. It further stressed that it will increase the trust and confidence reposed in the present administration in accordance with the dictum ‘reclaiming the trust’ and it would further enhance participatory governance in line with the Agenda one of Dr. Kayode Fayemi led administration. While wishing the state a happy celebration, and more fruitful years ahead, the release called for more cooperation with the present administration in its bid to move the state forward. MONTHLY ENVIROMENTAL SANITATION TO HOLD ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30. The November edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will hold on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 7am to 9am. According to a statement from the Office of the Commissioner for Environment, there will be the usual restriction of movement during the exercise; stressing that only those duly identified to be on essential duties will be exempted from the restriction. The statement disclosed that the theme of the exercise is “Open Defecation is an invitation to Epidemics; One House, One Toilet, is the Answer”. It stressed that top government functionaries, Local government chairmen and security agencies will be on hand to monitor the exercise and enforce compliance. Noting that the sanitation exercise in government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) will hold on Thursday, November 28 that of market places will take place on Friday, November 29, 2013. The statement urged all stakeholders to ensure compliance. EKITI ASSEMBLY PASSES RESOLUTION ON SPEAKING YORUBA LANGUAGE IN SCHOOLS Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed a resolution on the need to encourage the speaking of Yoruba language in schools across the state. The Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Ade Ajayi who moved the motion for the lawmaker’s consideration, observed that any culture that does not re-recreate itself would stagnate and die off. Hon. Ade-Ajayi said that gradually, Yoruba language is going into extinction as a result of disuse and lack of pride in it. He called for urgent action to stem the ugly trend. The motion seconded by Hon. Ogunrinde Olaseinde, representing Ekiti East Constituency I, attracted divergent view from the lawmakers. Some lawmakers argued that the word mandatory in the motion should be changed to encouragement, so that the motion would not be viewed as discriminatory, as schools in the state had pupils from other tribes. The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Orisalade Adetunji, Hon. Odu Ayodeji, and Hon. Adeyinka adeloye argued that the motion when passed would be discriminatory to other students from other parts of the country in the state. Hon. Orisalade specifically said the motion would violate section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, saying efforts should only be geared towards promoting Yoruba language rather than making it mandatory. Hon. Ogundele Folorunsho, Hon. (Mrs.) Ayo Fatunbi, Hon. Dele Olugbemi and Hon. Erinle Samuel among others, however observed the motion should be approved by the House, noting that the Assembly had already set the ball rolling by setting a day as Yoruba day to conduct parliamentary duties. They cited the recent lecture organized by the Assembly to mark the third anniversary of the Fayemi administration which was done in Yoruba language to buttress their point, stressing that the move would promote our cultural heritage as well as identity. The motion was approved by all the lawmakers after the word mandatory in the original motion was changed to encouragement. EKITI LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE COMMISSION SET TO COMPUTERISE REGISTRY. Arrangements are in top gear to computerize the Registry filing system at the Local Government Service Commission towards ensuring better service delivery and efficiency. The Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Chief Ranti Adebisi dropped this hint while declaring open a 2-day workshop organized for Registry Staff of the Local Governments. Chief Adebisi stressed the importance of the Registry Department in any organization, adding that it is in recognition of the role of the department to the overall success of entire system that government decided to make the Registries ICT compliant. According to him, government’s records capture information used in protecting the rights and interests of government’s businesses, citizens, historical and cultural knowledge about issues, places and events, emphasizing that Registries particularly in the Local Government settings, have been designated as archives. Positing that a well structured Registry would ensure good stewardship and public accountability, Chief Adebisi assured that government would leave no stone unturned at empowering its workforce and training them to face the challenges of preserving important records while legally and appropriately disposing off stale ones. He charged workers to reciprocate government’s gesture by taking advantage of opportunity provided by government to acquire knowledge and tap from the wealth of experience of the facilitators as well as actively participate in all interactive session towards achieving the desired goal. In his remarks, one of the participants at the workshop, Ms Omotayo Folasade lauded the Fayemi led administration for efforts at improving the lots of its workers.
