EL PASO. TEXAS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1900. OUTLAW CAPTURED Notorious Bandit Spent Last Night In The County Jail. OF BLACK JACK GANG And Wanted In More Places Than One, It Is Alleged.For Lawless Outrages. If tbe story told by the officers be truth Volney Musgrave, alias Dan Johnson, who was brought to tbe city last night by Sheriff Stewart, of Eddy county, and Sheriff Hlggins of Roswell Is a noted outlaw and formerly member or tbe notorious Black Jack gang of desperadoes and cutthroats that for years terrorized tbe southwest.Musgrave sent last night quietly int county jail and was taken t o Carlsbad this morning via the T. & P. He declined to talk and made no effort to escape as he did in California soon after his arrest.While in the city Sheriff Stewart told Officer Maoey Clements that Johnson or Musgrave was wanted In Eddy county for borse stealing and that be, with a pal, escaped from Otero county only a few months ago, after being captured near Alamogordo. The two men were captured by a posse after a running gun fight and one of them wassent to the penitentiary for life. The outlaw Musgrave, jumped bis bond mod fled to California where in company with James Taylor, another alleged member of tbe old Black Jack gang te obtained work on a bridge at Sin Luca, California, some three weeks ago. The capture Tbe two men spent their evenings in San Lucas, and something peculiar about their features attracted the attention of Constable Djeh. Referring to bis rogues gallery, composed ofpictures clipped from the Police Gazette, he was surprised to find faces that corresponded exactly with the description of Taylor and Johnson,(Musgrave) two of the Black Jack gang. The officer said nothing, but kept close watch them.Lh week there arrived at the express office from San Francisco a package for Taylor. Tbe constables curiosity was aroused to such a degree that he made bold to examine the contents and found that it contained a saddle ofMexican style, made by Gallup &Frasler, Pueblo, New Mexico, aod an old style bridle with a Spanish bit. The saddle was In good condition, although there were a number of holes, and on the mantel It was evident that It bad been the target of some expert marksman. accompanied by a pair of Mexican spurs and a loaded quirt. Doah, was now thoroughly convinced tbat he was dealing with dangerous men, and resolved to arrest Taylor and Musgrave at once. A posse was organized acd tbe two were taken by surprise and went to jail without demur. He wired Sheriff Higgles and Stewart of Chaves respectively, of his capture, and received a reply that they would leave at once to identify the men. When the New Mexico officer arrived the prisoners greeted them familiarly and the sheriffs identified both men It Is alleged a former members of Black Jack Musgraves gang While confined In the California all the prloners made a desperate effort to escape by forcing open the door and the nick of time were discovered and guards put over them until the New Mexico officers arrived
