ELA kin! > artist Mona Caron! Monas statement and link to her images: So why do I paint weeds, and why do I call them that. Ill unpack it this time: Im reclaiming the pejorative term, weeds, owning it, as it describes not their intrinsic value but their action. Thats why I use it for benign plants also, as they appear clandestinely, autonomously, in surprising places. Sometimes classified with the ominous-echoing term invasive non-natives, all plants are native somewhere, and if they wreak havoc somewhere else, its because the global environment has been disrupted. Its blowback, a consequence of globalization. This is part of my metaphor. Its about the invisible multitudes of un-valued living beings, existing at the margins, but not without gaining strength there. They are bothersome when they make inroads and can no longer be ignored. But in the context of suffocated environments, these undesirables are the first to carve a path for the rest of nature to follow, in due time. So this isnt a statement in favor of weeds, ecologically. Its an art metaphor pointing to small bits of life who, collectively, can break through seemingly invincible deadening top layers. It is these bad plants, when they break through cement, that herald the return of Syntropy. so I say crack that cement, now more than ever, something beneath has been yelling, I cant breathe!. Crack this system, reconnect earth to sky, our life to our dreams, and let the water reach them. Paved-over Utopias, take heart, rise up like WEEDS! See you all in the streets, today at 2.
