ELDER CARE SERVICES DEMANDS INCREASED DEMANDS IN CAREGIVER TRAINING NEEDED By Shirley Soden, RN, BSN, MBA/HCM As the baby boomer generation begins to retire and grow older, demand for elder care services is projected to skyrocket. As these elder care services increased, the demands for more training for Caregivers has now been the goal to meet each and every needs of the elderly living in assisted living facilities such as assisted living homes, assisted living centers, independent living and even at their own homes. Also, other Long term Care Insurance do require that a Caregiver has to get the proper training and takes a State Mandatory Exam for Caregiver services to be reimbursed by them. In Arizona, the Assisted Living Facility Caregiver Training rules have been modified to meet these needs. As of August 2013, if you plan to work in an assisted living facility, a Caregiver is now required to receive a MANDATORY 104 hours of training, including a State Mandatory Exam prior to start working in an assisted living facility. The New Caregiver training rules will have the Caregivers go through an extensive training that will include Basic Medication Management for sixteen hours, Service Plan training, Overview of the Rules of the Assisted Living Caregiver Training, Basic Caregiver Skills for at least 12 classroom hours, Mental Health and Social Service Needs for at least seven classroom hours, to name a few of the topics that are included on the Training, and is required to take a Mandatory State Board Exam with a 75% passing grade. If they fail the second time, they have to take the MANDATORY class all over again. AN ARIZONA Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) cannot work as a Caregiver in Assisted Living Facilities. The CNA is still required to go through the State MANDATORY TRAINING of 24 hours and pass the MANDATORY State Final Examination with 75% passing grade. A food handler’s card is also included a requirement prior to graduation from the Class. REQUIREMENT HOURS: 24 HOURS THAT INCLUDES THE -ORIENTATION AND OVERVIEW OF THE ASSISTED LIVING CAREGIVER TRAINING PROGRAM - SERVICE PLANS - MEDICATION MANAGEMENT CAREGIVER REQUIREMENTS: 18 years old and above Social Security Card, Driver’s license, Food Handler’s Card 104 hours of training 75% passing on all exams Ongoing Enrollment Schedule with D and S for the Final Examination and will obtain Training certificate after passing the State Mandated Final Exam.
