ELMORE LECTURE THIS THURSDAY NIGHT Dúchas Clonakilty Heritage commence their winter series of lectures this Thursday (9th) with a lecture by Caoimhín de Bhailís on Alfred Elmore who was a famous Clonakilty-born Victorian Artist in his day. The lecture will be held at The Parish Centre, starting at 8.30pm. Widely recognized in his lifetime and patronized by Daniel O’Connell, Alfred Elmore (1815-1881) is almost forgotten today. He was born at Mount Shannon (formerly Scartagh Cottage which was later the site of the Convent of Mercy), Clonakilty. His father was Dr. John Richard Elmore, a former surgeon with the 15th Dragoon Guards and his mother, Mary Anne Callanan, was the daughter of Dr. William Callanan, noted doctor and a leader in the United Irishmen. Dr Elmore is reputed to have set up the largest linen factory in Munster near Mill Street (now Ashe St), Clonakilty. Later after the death of his wife and the failure of his linen business, he and his son Alfred moved to London. One of his earliest works, The Martyrdom of St Thomas a Becket, commissioned by Daniel OConnell, hangs in Westland Row Church in Dublin. The lecture will be delivered by Caoimhín de Bhailís who is a doctoral candidate attached to the Department of History of Art, UCC. His thesis interest is in the field of Renaissance sculpture, specifically Donatello. He is also interested in Victorian Art and has recently published an article on Alfred Elmore in the Irish Arts Review. Caoimhín hopes to rekindle interest in Elmore for the forthcoming bi-centenary of his birth. His talk will illustrate and discuss examples of the artists work and will also fill in the gaps in his biography.
