EMERGENCY FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR FOOD IN ALEXANDER -- Alexander County Department of Social Services has been awarded $17,971 in federal funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, according to DSS Director Cindy Holman. The Local FEMA Board has designated these funds for assisting families with food. Alexander County Department of Social Services has been selected as the Local Recipient Organization (LRO) and will begin taking applications for this program beginning Thursday, January 30th, 2014. Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will stop being taken immediately upon depletion of the funds. One half of the funding has been received locally and must be fully depleted before the other half may be requested from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Local Board Plan determined that all of this funding should be expended by May 31, 2014. The income guidelines to be used are 130% of the Federal Poverty Level and applicants are encouraged to provide proof of income when they apply. Participation in other mandated services provided through DSS would not prohibit anyone from applying for FEMA assistance. Eligible households will receive a $50.00 food voucher per household member (not to exceed $200 per household). If you have questions, please feel free to contact Alexander County Department of Social Services at 828-632-1080.
