EMMA BEAR ADOPTED! Emma Bears foster family has given her the world...and allowed her the chance to have the life of a real dog. To finding her at MADACC, so scared she literally would not move by her own volition, wouldnt get in or near a car, couldnt even set paw out her front door without heading for the hills trying to run back in. To today - a playful, bouncy, 1 1/2 year old puppy, who lives for car rides, who loves running with her canine brothers, sisters, and friends, who cant wait for multiple daily w-a-l-k-s. This was no easy task for her foster family - tons of time and effort was put in to get her to this point - and it may never be finished as Emma Bear will always cope with fear of new situations. But they know she didnt deserve whatever hell she must have lived in prior to arriving at MADACC to put a puppy in the state of mind she was in, and refused to let that be the end of her story. They give her patience when she needs it (like when it took 5 sessions of a 6 session obedience class at Central Bark, just to walk through the door on her own), to knowing when a little nudge will open new doors for her she is going to love (like when for months she was so scared to even walk by a car, and then weeks of desensitization to the car, getting ever so close, to finally, with the help of one of her confident canine sisters, ripping off that bandaid and just getting in the car - which led to her favorite activity in the world - car rides!). And thereby, writing a different, hopeful, happy story for her instead. And we cannot go without praising the power of the pack! If there was ever an example of that, it was when the pack helped Emma. 4 resident dogs, and the dog that happened to be Emmys foster moms daughters dog (and Emmys new BFF) showed Emma in a language we humans could not that taking walks are fun - not scary, and one of them is always with her to this day when she goes into uncharted territory (even if that is as simple as going to a new park, or meeting new people - its a big deal to Emma, but something we all take for granted that when someone is afraid, its like climbing a mountain over and over). Obviously, Emmy and her foster family have been through a lot together. Theyve seen the breakdowns together, but also the breakthroughs. They accept Emma for what she is, and for the struggles she may always have - and that its okay (because dont we all have struggles?). They have given her a life we never imagined she would have when we met her one cold day in January, and want to make sure she always has that life - the chance to be what nature always intended for her - to be a dog and enjoy all that dogs do. Lots of new experiences, lots of treats, and of course, lots of chew toys. So it is today, that they welcomed Emmy into their family as a permanent member of the family. Emma Bear was home all along. Please take a moment to look through the happy moments from today, when the whole pack (and Emmys BFF) gathered round to celebrate her big day (and every celebration has treats, of course!) and compare it to the photo we attached of her intake photo at MADACC when she arrived there just 2 days after Christmas last year. What a difference care, training, patience, commitment, and love can make. Christmas was obviously not a good one last year...but its gonna be a great one this year! Thank you so much to Emmas foster (now forever) family - what a difference we could make in Milwaukee if there were more dedicated individuals in our community ready to step forward and put in the time to give a chance to another living being that has had a rough go and needs extra TLC and time like they so selflessly did. Congratulations to the whole family and to Emmy - rags to riches, you are one lucky dog!
