EN - Press conference by Federica Mogherini, and Pierre Krähenbühl, UNRWA Commissioner General & displaced people, and Q&A with the #ArabPress - 08.11.2014 - UNRWA Bahrain Kingdom Prep. Boys School, Gaza, Palestinian Territories: I decided to pay my first visit after taking office in the EU here, because I feel it is not only a #political responsibility, but also a #human duty, to make sure that this ends. As a #mother even before than as a politician, I came here to see and understand the frustration and the anger, and the need for dignity that the people in Gaza have. After the war, when the ceasefire was reached in Cairo, we engaged all in having other steps ; we said the solution is only going to be found if Gaza manages to find ways of living, I would say of breathing. And we know we have to do some things urgently, we dont have time to waste, we cannot wait. We need to work on the reconstruction, as it was said, more efficiently, more effectively & quickly than it is now. I think we owe it to the families and the children that I see here ; the children that were born during the war and deserve to see a house before they are 1 year-old. And we owe it to the children that would like maybe to use this as a school. And let me thank very much, from the deep of my heart, all the UNRWA staff, that is working here, and has been working here under extremely difficult conditions, and made all of this possible. Europe and Europeans will always be ready to support this work. But we know all very well, and we know that very well in Europe, that the only way of really helping Gaza is putting an end to this conflict, and get into having a Palestinian State that can live in peace next to an Israeli State. We know that also, for reconstruction, we need to have a Palestinian government acting here. Thats why I believe, and all Europeans with me, that it is important that the National Consensus Government manages to act here in Gaza. I hope this will be possible, not in a far away future, but soon. You will have Europe at your side, at the side of UNRWA and UN system, but most of all we will be there to try and find a real solution. And were asking all in this moment, not in 3 months, not in 6 months, not in 1 year, all, in this moment, to restart a political process that can lead to the Two-State Solution. Thank you. Choukran / شكراً. The words of President Abbas are exactly the words I used yesterday: if we do not build on the agreement that was reached in Cairo, last month, in the end of august, and we do not have the step 2, and then the step 3 of the agreement, which means the reconstruction, the lift of the blockade, and in the end, the Palestinian State, we will always go back and back to violence. So what the EU is doing is on one side helping the reconstruction, and supporting also all of this (showing the Bahrain school), the EU is supporting in a consistent way all the humanitarian support and the reconstruction effort, and on the other side we know that Europe has to put all its political weight to make sure that a political process restarts. And the other thing we are willing to do, we want to do and we are trying to do, is to make the National Consensus Government work and come back to Gaza. Q & A from and to the Arab Press (Al-Jazeera, ...) on the recognition of the State of Palestine and on what Federica Mogherini foresees for the future : InshaAllah/إن شاء الله, We cannot afford a 4th War, not only the people in Gaza, but all the world.
