EP registers a traffic violation every 15 seconds The Eastern Province registers one traffic violation every 15 seconds or four violations every minute which translates to 5,760 per day. The General Traffic Directorate in the Eastern Province said that around 40,000 violations were committed last week. These include not fastening the seat belt, using mobile phone while driving, random parking and running traffic lights. Brig. Gen. Abdulrahman Al-Shanbari, director general of traffic in the Eastern Province, said in a press statement during a preliminary meeting in Alkhobar during the Gulf Traffic Week 2014 event that around 5 million cars ply Eastern Province roads daily. He said that there were 57,000 violations involving obscure number plates last year, adding that the penalties for tampering with number plates include impounding the vehicle and, if the violation is repeated, the prosecution of the driver. Al-Shanbari announced that 58 mobile cameras have been installed on various roads in the province. Saher registers a violation only when the speed limit exceeds 120 km an hour on the Kingdom’s highways, reiterated Brig. Gen. Ali Al-Rashadi, spokesman for the General Traffic Directorate in the Kingdom. The Saher system has been embroiled in controversy ever since its approval with some saying that it is just another way to eke money from the public while others believe that it is a useful tool to limit reckless driving.
