ERBIL-Hewlêr, Kurdistan region Iraq,— The Iranian Consulate in Iraqs Kurdistan Region came under attack on Friday, after a group of protesters gathered around the building in an effort to stop what they see as the unlawful execution of Kurds. Kurdish civil society organizations as well as Kurdish political activists chanted anti-Iranian government slogans. Some protesters threw rocks at the consulate building and burnt Iraqi flags. A number of them were arrested, as Erbil police tried to control the situation. “The gathering was suppose to be in front of a park, but some of the protesters changed the course of the protest and went to attack the Iranian Consulate,” Brigadier Abdul-Khaliq Tala’at, head of Erbil police, told Basnews. “We have arrested a number of protesters that attacked the consulate,” he added. The protest came as a result of the recent executions of Kurdish political prisoners in Iran. More than ten Kurds have been killed in the last few weeks. In Slêmanî [Sulaimaniyah], a northern city of the Kurdistan Region, human rights and political activists held a three-day strike in front of the Kurdish Parliament, calling on Kurdish authorities to appeal to the Iranian government to stop the executions against the Kurdish people of Iran. No violence was reported in Sulaimaniyah. Protesters in Erbil have also written a letter to the Iranian authorities, calling on new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to stop the killing of Kurdish prisoners. Iran has executed more than 200 people in the three months since new President Hassan Rouhani took office. During three months since new President Hassan Rouhani took office, 2 Kurdish political prisoners have been executed and the sentence of execution of 7 other Kurdish prisoners has been confirmed by Islamic judicial center. Kurdish political prisoner Sherko Moarefi jailed in the Seqiz prison in Iranian Kurdistan [East Kurdistan] has been hanged November 4, 2013. Also the Kurdish political prisoner Habibullah Gulperipur was hanged on October 26, 2013 in Umraniye jail, Iranian Kurdistan. According to the International Campaign for Human Rights, an Imam from the city of Mariwan and another state official are pushing for the execution of the two brothers. Security forces arrested Zanyar Moradi, 23, and Loghman Moradi, 25, on August 2, 2009, for the July 2009 murder of the son of Mariwan’s Friday Prayer. According to an Amnesty International report, Iran is only second to China in number of executions per year.
