ERIC KRAUS ON McFAUL For me the single most striking thing is that McFaul was warning Eric Kraus 10 years ago that the Russians were so terrified of China that they would embrace America. As Eric Kraus correctly says someone who makes such an astonishingly wrong prediction ought to be regarded with skepticism. Instead because his opinions were those the gilded circle in Washington wanted to hear McFaul enjoyed a meteoric career and ended up being appointed US ambassador to Moscow where as Eric Kraus says his performance was entirely disastrous. I truly believed when Obama launched the reset that he as a black liberal American genuinely meant it though I had no expectations of its eventual success because of the strength of the anti Russian forces in Washington. I now realise that I was totally wrong. McFauls appointment as ambassador (long before the Ukrainian crisis) shows what the reset was really about. Briefly it was an attempt to use soft power methods to change and mould Russias political scene in a pro US direction. In no sense did Obama ever intend it as paving the way for a genuine rapprochement with Russia. The reason for Obamas very real anger towards Putin and Russia is because of the total failure of this strategy.
