ESSAY TO WIN MAYOR POSITION OF PALMERSTON NORTH CITY COUNCIL Dr. Saad Al-Harran Specialist in Youth unemployment, poverty reduction and social entrepreneurship. There are many community commentaries who believed that Palmerston North is a dying city because of business failures are high so does poverty and youth unemployment due to leadership crisis and lack of strategic marketing and promotion. Others are concern why we have too many Cafés and restaurants in Broadway Ave that leads to high competitions between many local businesses and business failures. Regrettably there are many fresh university graduates who are keen to move somewhere else in the country because of lack of jobs and employment opportunities and are moving overseas for better wages with no income tax such as Qatar and UAE. Similarly our university has no connectivity with the rest of the community and if this gap continued widening then the city suffers most of its human capital resources so does the whole nation. From the above analysis many community leaders are of the opinion that Palmerston North as city needs an electrical shock to its management of local economy and businesses and major changes are urgently needed. Some of city councillors who wants to apply for mayoralty position can bring changes that what most of people wants to see and local economy be reactivated. I believe each city councillor has the moral duty and responsibility to act firmly by bringing changes that most of people in the city want to see happening soon. To select the right mayor for our beloved city Palmerston North I strong suggest that each candidate for the mayoralty should write an essay focusing on the following problems in order to find practicable solution to these social ills: (1) High Business Failure.
