EU-PARLIAMENTARY DELUSION It is quite nauseating listening to the government, kommata and political candidates discussing how important EU Parliamentary Elections are for Cyprus. It would be more appropriate if the mass media and politicians spoke the real truth and explained to ordinary citizens what an MEP’s priorities and responsibilities are rather than drivel petty political hype - in fact under the present EU structure, having a Parliament filled with 766 MEPs it’s meaningless. The main reason for that is simple; EU Parliament it’s a lame institution without powers or the legitimacy to make and pass laws. Unless revised, its main existence is simply to rubber-stamp directives decided behind closed doors taken in secret and to democratize the existence of the Council of Ministers and Commission; those two unelected institutions are the true masters of the EU and not the perceived EU Parliament that costs over 1.5 billion Euros per year to run! MEPs are certainly NOT there to support their own nation state’s best interests. That is a fallacy! Our six Cypriot MEPs are there to merge with all the other MEPs with not a stitch of voting power or influence to make any changes in the interest of Cyprus. Their job is to protect EU interests and to legitimize this undemocratic institution that keeps on promising the elusive EU dream of prosperity and one “happy family”. Time for a rethink!
