GEORGES, GRENADA, Monday, November 25, 2013: GIS The enthusiasm shown by farmers, producers and exporters affiliated with some of Grenada’s unique products led to a meeting in St George’s on Wednesday, 20 November with representatives from the European Union. This as the Ministry of Legal Affairs work with farmers and producers to move the process forward in strengthening the presence of quality Grenadian products on international markets. One such method is to attain Geographical Indication (GI) status. GI speaks to the branding of a product specific to its territorial origin, with uniqueness unmatched to any other place in the world, leading to the protection of that particular product on the market. Senior Legal Counsel in the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Robert Branch said the meeting was held so that the Europeans can have firsthand knowledge of farmers’ interest and what assistance they can provide to Grenada in this process. “We’ve been having several consultations with them, government has already begun to set up the legal regulatory process for GI as a branding strategy to differentiate our products that we produce in Grenada from our competition in the international market” said the Senior Legal Counsel. He said Grenada already receives a high price for its products on the international market as a result of the uniqueness and the high value that they place on it. European Union representative Francis Fay commended the work of the farmers in being able to introduce their products to other markets. He says the ball is now in their court to move the process forward in identifying the specifications which make Grenadian products unique. He said also, GI is all about protecting assets making sure that more of the revenue goes back to the farmer.
