EU presidents strengthen the case for getting out THE reality of the European Union is unspeakably grim. Its economies are on the slide, unemployment queues are lengthening and living standards are falling. he euro has created growing hostility between the countries of northern and southern Europe, while the EU remains a laughable lightweight on the world stage. And of course it has also deservedly become a byword for corruption and excess. Yet rather than tackling any of these substantial issues EU Council of Ministers President Herman Van Rompuy wishes to take the easy option. He is outrageously demanding that Europe’s Court of Auditors tone down its criticisms of mismanagement and fraud, complaining that: “Every year they generate headlines that yet again the EU’s accounts have not been signed off.” It is tempting to berate Mr Van Rompuy for his astonishing arrogance and complacency. And yet for all of us who wish Britain to break free of the stranglehold of Brussels he has become an invaluable if unwitting ally. Along with his terrible twin the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso he gives the EU an even worse name than would otherwise be the case. When the glorious day of Britain’s departure comes and the campaign medals are minted both deserve to be told that they were often mentioned in dispatches. express.co.uk/comment/expresscomment/429324/EU-presidents-strengthen-the-case-for-getting-out
