EVANS HEAD MEMORIAL AERODROME.... STEEPED IN RICH AUSTRALIAN AVIATION HISTORY. This year we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the construction of WW2 RAAF Station Evans Head 1939-45. At the time is was the largest air training facility in the Southern Hemisphere hosting the RAAF No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School (BAGS) and No. 1 Air Observers School (AOS) under the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS). 5500 RAAF personnel trained at Evans Head in 109 Schools, with most being sent to Europe to be with RAF Bomber Command. Sadly 1170 made The Supreme Sacrifice and did not return. RAAF Station Evans Head following the Pearl Harbour attack became the frontline facility to protect The Brisbane Line where an Australian government decision was made to allow Japanese forces to advance (with resistance) to the NSW/QLD border. Fortunately this did not occur. After many years of community struggle the remnants of RAAF Station Evans Head were placed on the NSW Hertitage Register, and moves are now well afoot to have it placed on the National Heritage Register, and to become a permanent Memorial to RAAF Bomber Command. It has been a struggle to save this facility, and The Great Eastern Fly In, established 23 years ago by a group of dedicated local aviation enthusiasts who banded together to save the facility, has indeed evolved into a great success. More importantly is has happened with YOUR support over many years of tireless effort in making the Great Eastern the huge success that it is today. SEE YOU AT THE FLY IN January 10-11th! ~~~ LEST WE FORGET ~~~
