PENDLETON, MACNEALY, MEIER, KYER AND NEMIRE PREVAIL AT COLUMBUS June 14, 2014 (Columbus, OH)… Chad Pendleton allocated his third consecutive NASCAR Whelen All-American series late-model feature win Saturday night at Columbus Motor Speedway. The second-generation driver took control from the outset of the 35-lap contest and fended off a mid-race challenge by fast qualifier Donnie Hill to notch the victory. Pendleton spoke of the team’s qualifying struggles which found his Shamrock Towing entry starting second in victory lane interview. “I would much rather race up through the field but we keep having trouble qualifying,” confessed the winner in victory lane. “We need to try to figure that out.” Josh Cahill and Pendleton made up the front row of the 35-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts late model main event and once chief starter Jim Paugh waved the green flag Pendleton was off to the races. Cahill dropped into the second position with Bill Browning posted in third. Running in lock-step through the first ten tours of the third-mile paved oval, the man on the move was Hill. Starting eighth, he swept past Matthew Parsons as eleven laps flashed on the NASCAR scoreboard. Continuing in the outside lane he made quick work of Kyle Purvis and Browning before disposing of Cahill and setting out after the leader. Aided by a lap-13 caution, Hill closed on Pendleton for a restart and stalked the eventual winner for the ensuing 20-laps during which time Purvis climbed to third and ran down the fleet duo. With Hill pulling alongside of Pendleton with five circuits left Hill’s Architect Glass mount lost traction and turned sideways exiting turn four. Unable to avoid, Purvis collided with Hill completing his spin. Officials ruled that Purvis was unable to avoid the contact and would not be penalized leaving the spin by Hill as the cause of the caution. Hill was relegated to the tail for the restart and Pendleton led Purvis, Cahill, Browning and Matthew Parsons to the checkered flag. In what would be the most exciting race of the evening Sean MacNealy passed Donald Parsons on the final corner to claim victory in the Columbus modified finale. Shortly after the 18-car field flashed under the initial green flag trouble manifested itself in a skirmish that eliminated Shawn Gray and sent Ethan Mullet pitside for repairs. Once back underway, Kyle Purvis showed the way through lap-10 when officials penalized him for violation of the “breakout rule.” Running lap times much faster than his qualifying time Purvis was restarted on the tail while Donald Parsons inherited the lead. Gary Zink gave chase at that point ahead of MacNealy but Terry Humphrey was on the move. Up from his tenth starting spot Humphrey swept past MacNealy and Zink on lap-12 before closing on Parsons and a bid for the top spot. Humphrey did so expediently and battled side-by-side through lap-21 when contact between the two caused Parsons to spin. He was allowed to reassume his position while Humphrey restarted on the tail. Parsons led MacNealy back to the green flag and what many thought would be a win but not MacNealy. The former Indy Car mechanic immediately steered his car into the outside lane pulling even as the white flag wave. Wheel to wheel down the backstretch, the tracks well groomed outside lane provided the needed traction in turn #4 and MacNealy streaked across the finish line four feet ahead of Parsons. A resurgent Mullet battled back from his first lap shunt to finish third followed by Zink and Kevin Doran. Chris Meier held off a late race barrage by Mike Litchfield to secure his second sport stock feature win this season. Like Pendleton in late model action, Meier dedicated the triumph to his father who has been battling health issues lately. In an emotional interview, he spoke in glowing terms of his father Owen who was once the man to beat the former mini stock division at the speedway. In this evening’s 20-lapevent, Meier powered around Dennis Middleton on lap-9 and held say over Litchfield, Ralph Vinson, Middleton and Bruce Holmes for the fathers day weekend event. Corey Kyer slipped between early race leader Frank Hreha and a lapped car half way through the crazy compact feature to claim his third win of 2014. Hreha had paced the 23-car field from the outset of the 20-lap affair but paused for a split second in traffic and Kyer pounced. Kyer went on to a convincing victory from there followed by Hreha, Cecil Collins, David Lucas and Ryan Smith. The second appearance of 2014 produced a similar result for the USAC HPD Midget Series as Austin Nemire powered to a convincing victory aboard his Hemelgarn Beast chassis racer. Rounding out the top five were Calvin Carroll, Adam Thomason, Jack Cross and Niki Carroll.
