EVENING NEWS: July 23rd, 2014 AMOS WEKESA RECEIVES AUTO MONTHLY GOLD MEDAL Amos Wekesa of Great Lakes Safaris was presented an AUTO medal for the month of June this afternoon by Gat Tumwesigye at the AUTO Secretariat. Wekesa, is the ‘heart and soul’ of the online petition which aimed to scrap VAT on upcountry accommodation in Uganda by reinstating zero-rated VAT. The e-petition addressed to the President of Uganda was opened in June, a week after the reading of the 2014 Uganda Budget and it attracted thousands of signatures. The petition stated clearly that: 18% VAT on tourist lodges and hotels outside Kampala District will increase tourism prices, slowdown visitor numbers, kill domestic tourism and wipe out profitability in the sector. This will threaten jobs and the USD1 billion earnings from the industry. As a result, the office of the President met the Tourism players on July 17th,2014 to discuss pertinent views from the tourism sector private operations among which was the issue of VAT. #End
