EVENING UPDATE OCT 4 Size: 97,717 acres Containment: 98% Total Personnel Assigned: 2,095 The warmer and drier weather has aided firefighters in locating areas that are still burning near the perimeter of the fire. Most of these areas of heat have been put out. Residents should expect to continue to see and smell smoke from interior pockets of the fire. Firefighters continue to work on the remaining suppression activities and plan to have this work completed by tomorrow evening. Firefighters are walking over the area near the fire’s edge to locate and extinguish areas of heat remaining within, but close to, the fire perimeter. Firefighters continue mop up and patrol. Helicopters are assisting crews as needed. Fire crews continue to remove hazardous trees, chip brush and remove road debris to make roads safer for public travel. All forest roads within the burned area remain closed due to hazardous conditions which are expected to persist for some time. Crews have repaired 122 miles (39 percent) of hand and dozer lines and roads used for fire suppression activities and removed excess fire equipment such as hose, pumps, and tanks. A team of specialists continues to work on emergency stabilization measures. Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) is a rapid assessment of burned watersheds to identify imminent post-wildfire threats to human life and safety, property, and critical natural or cultural resources on National Forest System lands. Forest Closures: Eldorado National Forest: Tuesday the Eldorado National Forest released a closure order reducing the size of the closure area.
