EVENTS OF NOVEMBER 1ST: 1755 – Earthquake destroys Lisbon, Portugal. It was on a Sunday and the Feast of All Saints. Within 15 minutes 70% of Lisbon (Capital of Portugal) was in ruins. Those who fled towards the sea were drowned by a huge tsunami (tidal wave). Those who took refuge in Cathedrals died as the buildings collapsed. Nearly 100,000 people were killed today in 1755 in Lisbon, Portugal. 1762 – Birthday of Spencer Perceval; a British Prime Minister from 1809 who was assassinated in the House of Commons. 1814 – Following Napoleons defeat, the European Congress opens in Vienna, Austria. 1858 – Queen Victoria of England proclaimed THE RULER OF INDIA. 1922 – The first radio licences go on sale in Britain. They cost 10 shillings (50pence/90cents). 1950 – US President Truman survives an assassination attempt as two Puerto Rican nationalists shoot their way into his private house, killing one of his guards. 1954 – Algeria begins a war of independence against France. 1984 – Rajiv Gandhi is sworn in as Indias premier. 1993 – The EUROPEAN UNION is born.
