We might have a ‘Scottish Pound’ but it will not be the same. Egypt have an ‘Egyptian Pound’ but this also is not underwritten by the Bank of England, strangely enough. To set up an independent currency will take billions of pounds on its’ own. The good news is that your wages will likely stay the same, as the Scottish Pound will shadow the UK pound, but it will be worthless anywhere else, including on Ebay, Amazon, Gumtree, On-line gaming and internet purchases. If you are on, say, £25K a year now, you still will be, but it will be 25,000 Scottish Pounds, which the best financial experts reckon will be worth about Ten Thousand UK – that’s a 60% decrease in your salary, with cost of living going up too. Cost of Living: Cost of living is set to rise hugely, with all of the major supermarkets claiming that they will have to raise prices. Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer have all announced this. Tesco and Sainsbury’s are sitting on the fence but have been ‘inclined to agree’ (and Tesco are withdrawing their bank, so what does that tell you?) and homewares stores such as John Lewis, clothing brands such as Next and many others have warned that prices will rise as distribution costs soar. Add to this the 54 VAT relief items such as food, books and children’s clothing which will no longer be exempt, and the cost is becoming enormous. Small Independent Businesses: The small independent business will be hit as hard (if not harder) than the big ones if independence becomes a reality. Consider the Sandwich shops, Newsagents, Convenience stores and others who thrive on trade from employees of big businesses, who will now fall silent. Consider the small manufacturers, the suppliers, the distribution companies, lorry and van drivers, advertising companies, the transport network – every single company, large and small, will be affected, and the small companies can’t survive this. Small and medium businesses will simply collapse. High streets will be ghost towns…oh and of course, there will be even more jobseekers! – The benefits bill is increasing exponentially already!
