EXCERPT: Maybe we’re just being cynical here, but we find it more than interesting that this so-called $10 “tax cut” was approved just a month before the June 24 primary election. “While it may just be a modest reduction, it does show that we ... can make the budgetary decisions that are necessary that every family in Frederick County does on a weekly and monthly basis,” Commissioners President Blaine Young said in a May 30 News-Post story by reporter Bethany Rodgers. That’s interesting, because what Young isn’t telling you is that to balance the fiscal 2015 budget, the commissioners are using $25 million of the cash balance from the previous fiscal year and are transferring $6.5 million from the Fleet Fund. And we also seriously doubt property owners will find an average savings of 83 cents a month provides much financial relief. It’s irresponsible that three of the county commissioners (Billy Shreve and Kirby Delauter were the other two) seem to be placing their political ambitions above fiscal responsibility. Commissioners David Gray and Paul Smith voted no. Even the county budget officer, Regina Howell, advised the commissioners several weeks ago against trying to absorb a $1 million blow to the fiscal 2015 county budget — particularly this late in the process. And that was before the county learned a week ago that its workers’ compensation costs for volunteer firefighters could potentially cost $1.2 million more than expected.
