EXPECTING THE BEST: One of the central themes of good parenting - TopicsExpress

EXPECTING THE BEST: One of the central themes of good parenting is to expect the best of yourself and your children. This is an element that is largely missing and misunderstood in families today. This is true for different reasons-and in different ways not only in the United States and Japan but throughout the world. An integral part of expecting the best involves the discovery of the best that is within you and your child and the development of the skills to produce the best. This does not mean trying for perfection .It is definitely not the the same as the 100 percent ,lockstep, unbending conformity with the externally imposed expectations characteristics of Japan.Neither is it the same as the vagueness ,hesitancy, uncertainty and avoidance of expectations that is characteristic of American families. When parents internally inspire excellent expectations for themselves and their children,,within a framework of love ,values ,vision and candid communication, the best is what results.Excellent parents are thus like a compass, providing direction and magnetic pull.
