EXT. MANDALAY STREETS – THAT AFTERNOON (SCENE #18) Establishing. TITLE CARD: CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA INT. ZUKO’S HOUSE – LOUNGE - AFTERNOON Zuko paces, distraught. A man is sitting on the couch not far from him. This is DETECTIVE MANGCOTYWA, late 30s, athletic. He has a writing pad on his hand, jotting down some notes. Next to him is another man, DETECTIVE SOLWAZI, early 30s, well-built. ZUKO We were happy...everything was going okay for us. We just bought a house in Bantry Bay...and we were expecting a baby...ndilahlekelwe ngabantu ababini xa kungokunje. SOLWAZI There are no witnesses, none of your neigbours saw anything. ZUKO So you don’t have any leads yet? SOLWAZI No. MANGCOTYWA Mr Langa is there someone you know who might have wanted your wife dead? ZUKO No. That’s the thing. Lily is...was a sweet, kind person. She was so good to everyone. So generous and caring. She was also doing a lot of charity work. Most people loved her...I can’t...I can’t believe she’s now gone. Who might have killed her? MANGCOTYWA When last did you see her alive? ZUKO Thursday morning before she went to work. Midday I drove to George. She was supposed to take an early flight on Friday andilandele... He stops and covers his face with both his hands. He takes a deep breath. ZUKO (CONT’D) I called her after 5, just checking up on her. Our conversation didn’t...we had an argument and she hung up on me. SOLWAZI What did you argue about? ZUKO She told me that she wasn’t gonna take that flight, that she didn’t want to meet with my folks anymore. I wasn’t pleased because I couldn’t understand why she didn’t want to meet them. We had an agreement that she was gonna fly down there that morning but she decided to back out, with no valid reason. Saxabana ke and she hung up on me. I called her again after 9 but she never picked up. I thought it was because endiqumbele, I didn’t know that she’s...that she’s been murdered. SOLWAZI Was there a third person in the picture? ZUKO What? SOLWAZI Was there another woman or another man in the picture? ZUKO No...No, no! What are you trying to say Detective? What’s that got to do with anything? MANGCOTYWA Mr Langa your wife is dead. She’s been brutally murdered. So if you have any idea who might have killed her you gotta help us find that person. You saying most people loved her, right? But somebody offed her and we trying to find out who it is. Maybe a jealous makhwapheni or something... SOLWAZI Work with us here Mr Langa. ZUKO There’s no other person. We loved each other. We had a healthy strong marriage. EXT. ZUKO’S HOUSE – DRIVEWAY – SAME (SCENE #19) Solwazi follows Mangcotywa down the driveway to the gate. SOLWAZI So what do you think? MANGCOTYWA Seems like this is another dead end case. SOLWAZI And a high-profile one too MANGCOTYWA Yah ey, and that doesn’t make our job any easier. SOLWAZI Call it sixth sense or something. I just don’t trust this guy, Zuko. MANGCOTYWA (gives him a weird look) We got a lot of work to do buddy. A lot of work. They walk out the open gate to their car. INT. TOM RESIDENCE – LOUNGE – EVENING (SCENE #20) Carly is sitting on the couch watching TV. Bantu walks through the front door with a briefcase in his hand. Carly gets up and goes to him. She gives him a hug. They hug each other. CARLY Welcome home hun. How was your day? BANTU (letting go of Carly) Hectic. Yours? CARLY It was okay. I can see that yours was very hectic kwa uba ubuye ngelixesha. Been trying to reach you on your cell. Bantu walks past Carly toward the stairs. BANTU (ignores) Did Zuko leave? CARLY. Yes. Eish he’s going through a difficult time. I wish ndingamthathela. BANTU He’s gonna be fine. I’m going to take a shower. CARLY Okay, come down when you’re done. I cooked us a nice a dinner. BANTU I’m not hungry. I’m going to take a shower and go to bed. CARLY Want me to join you? BANTU Sthandwa sam I’m very tired. He walks up the stairs. Carly watches him. She can feel that something is not right. INT. NICHOLE’S HOUSE – BATHROOM SHOWER – NIGHT (SCENE #21) A silhouette of a woman having a a shower behind a translucent shower glass door is seen. She enjoys the jet of water that comes down upon her. She turns off the shower. She opens the door. Hand out, she takes a towel from a towel rack near the shower door. She hears her cell phone ringing from another room. She wraps herself in a towel and gets out of the shower. She puts her bathroom slippers on and hurries to the bedroom. This is NICHOLE CUNNINGHAM, a British woman, late 20s, she is give-a-damn pretty. INT. NICHOLE’S HOUSE – BEDROOM – CONTINUOUS (SCENE #21A) She goes to the bed. She glances at the screen of her ringing cellphone. CLOSE ON Incoming call Alizwa. She presses the IGNORE button. She goes to the chest of drawers and takes out a clean towel. She goes to stand in front of a wall-length mirror and towel dries her hair. Her cellphone rings again. She goes to the bed still towel drying her hair. She glances at the phone’s display. Alizwa’s still calling. She sits on the bed and ignores it. NICHOLE Bastard. She dries her face and her neck. The phone stops ringing. She picks it up and dials. She puts it to her ear. INT. ZUKO’S HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT – INTERCUT (SCENE #22) Zuko’s in bed. His cellphone on the bedside table rings. He grabs it and answers. ZUKO Hey. NICHOLE Hey hun. How are you? ZUKO So-so. How are you? NICHOLE Okay, I guess. Been calling you all day. I miss you. Please come over. ZUKO I miss you too babe. But we can’t be seen together. You know that my wife just died and there’s this murder investigation going on. We got to keep it low, avoid the radar. Know what I mean? NICHOLE Yeah but I thought now that you’re back we could meet up and... ZUKO Under different circumstances we could but now...things are different. NICHOLE Okay, I understand. I love you. ZUKO I love you too. Goodnight NICHOLE Night. She hangs up. Smiles.
