The love affair between FTJ Chiluba and Sata was romantic while it lasted; Sata became a champion of the plight of FTJ Chiluba, while the media and Mwanawasa accused FTJ of corruption. Sata swore to squash the corruption charges against FTJ, refuting them as based on malice and tribalism with the intent to persecute FTJ and finish him politically or otherwise. Seeing redemption in Sata, FTJ went to great heights to vilify the governance of Mr. Mwanawasa, and campaigned countrywide for the PF. But Sata begun to grow cold feet with the fame and crowd that FTJ begun to attract from PF supporters and Members countrywide. Even most of the MPs on the PF ticket were so fond of FTJ that whenever he was to travel to South Africa for specialist medical attention they paraded at the Kenneth Kaunda Airport to express their solidarity. It is often said that in politics there are no permanent friends no enemies, there are just permanent interests. Sata cut off the friendship with FTJ when he began to perceive him as a threat to his political future. To this effect whether, the threat against FTJ was perceived or real, Sata warned his MPs never to be associated with FTJ Chiluba, and demanded that FTJ should not be associated with the PF party, in his own words, Sata to FTJ that, “If you think you are so popular form your own party and we will see who is more popular between you and me!”
