EXTRACT: from THE KEYS - How to Get Everything You Want in Life by Allan and Barbara Pease - published October 2014 What do I really want as a career or mission? How you will spend your working life is usually one of the top priorities on most people’s list yet studies show that over 80% of people don’t like what they do for a living. And many people claim they are too busy earning a living to be able to do what they would really like to do. Do you get out of bed every day excited about the possibilities of what could happen that day? Do you look forward to waking up on a workday? If not – and there’s an 80% chance that’s the case – what should you really be doing with your work life? The answer to this question is simple – what is it in your past that you enjoyed doing more than anything else and you loved it so much that you’d do it for free if you were given the opportunity? Think back to what things in your life gave you the most joy and happiness and made you feel the best. These are the areas in which you will find your life mission or career. Ask yourself, ‘What is the one thing that I would love to do so much that I’d do it for free, but that I could also get paid for?’ Once you can answer this question you have discovered one of your life’s missions. Many people don’t consider that they can make a great living or become rich by doing what they really love to do. But if you write it on your list, you will find the way. You may say, “But I love socializing with people and talking. How can I do that for a living?” Well, Jay Leno, David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey loved that too. Maybe you think, “I really love keeping my home as a beautiful place to be.” Well - so did Martha Stewart. “I really love to play sport”… think of Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Gary Schumacher. Sure, these are people who have become wildly successful and mega-rich in their pursuits but each began as an unknown person who pursued the thing they really loved to do the most and were doing for free. And think of the tens of thousands of others who aren’t famous but who make a successful living out of these same pursuits. Find something you really love to do and you will never work another day in your life The things you are passionate about are not random. They are your calling. When I was at school I loved to be a comedian and tell jokes. One of my teachers once said I should pursue a career as a ‘professional smartass’. And that’s exactly what I have done for over 40 years. You can make a great living out of doing anything that really turns you on. “I love beating people up!’ one wiseguy told us. “Think Mike Tyson, Chuck Norris and Muhammed Ali” was my reply. From today, I want you to stop thinking in terms of getting a ‘job’. A ‘job’ is something a person does when they’d rather be doing something else. If the job you are in is not the answer you gave when we asked you what the thing was you’d do for free if you could, then start planning right now to get out of it. The definition of ‘job’ – Just Over Broke Whatever it is that really turns you on, there are millions of people who make successful careers from it right now and who wake up every day full of excitement about going to do it. Starting in a venture or career purely to make money does not stand the test of time and can make you cynical and unhappy. When you do what your heart tells you that you were meant to do, the money will eventually follow. Don’t be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.
