EXTREME ENGINEERING: THE DUTCH DELTA WORKS The Delta Works, the largest flood protection project in the world, is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land, following the disastrous North Sea flood in 1953. The works were declared finished after almost fifty years in 1997. Accomplishment of the Delta Works has never meant a remission of consideration for water management in the Netherlands, as climate changes ask for a fundamental reflection on a permanent livable design of the Netherlands for future generations. The Delta Works continue to be a global model for future technological development whereby the safety of humans and nature play the central part.
