EYC Match Report - 19th October 2014 What an eclectic afternoon at the EYC down at the Coach House. Thats the beauty of the EYC – you never know quite what youre gonna get, but you know youre gonna hear something surprising. EYC kicked off at a very prompt 3:30 with New Tricks – featuring Tele Dactyl, JJ Tombs with EYC virgin Dave Cox. Along with the ever reliable Thundersticks, they treated us to some great blues – Help Me, Suzie Q, Sell My Monkey, Stormy Monday. They were joined by the lovely EYC hostess Jax Thornewill to add some much needed glamour (their words not mine) for Before You Accuse Me. Big Boss Man was followed by John Lee Hookers Boom Boom with guest harmonica from EYC joint host Chris. Newcomer Adam Flint played some great acoustic tunes including Aint No Sunshine, Weak As I Am, End Of The Road and a lovely rendition of the Verve’s Blinded By The Sun. Malcolm Slater then treated us to a collection of his own acoustic tunes – Stormy Nights, Touch Deep, Angels, All I Ever Wanted, and Coming Home. Both Adam and Malcolm played great guitar and had wonderfully expressive voices. We hope to see them both back very soon. In keeping with the acoustic theme, the EYC house band (Mick Sadler, Johnny Thunderstix, Chris Burkill) were up next, but as a stripped back bare version. Acoustic versions of Diddy Wah Diddy, Sweet Home Chicago, landlord Dave’s favourite Walkin The Dog, finishing off with Gloria. In Steve’s absence, they were joined by DILF bass player, Pete Brooks. We were then treated to some wonderful Chicago blues thanks to the Hamsters of Doom – Pete Butcher on bass, and Bob Meyrick on a beautiful custom 335, supported by the ever present Thundersticks on drums. BB Kings Never Make Your Move Too Soon, Steely Dan’s Pretzel Logic, and featuring EYC legend Tyhee Slim on vocals, Stormy Monday. An exceptional vocal by Neil, its great to hear the wonderful voice of the man who started this whole shebang. Eclectic. Next up was super group, the Whyte Thorns – Jax and John (on guitar and drums), and Gordon on guitar and vocals, Sarah on cello and drums. Game of Thrones kicked us off, followed by Holes, a lovely vocal by Jax on Rotterdam, Gordon with a great Valerie, then a special and surprising medley of Jolene and Another Brick In The Wall. EYC returned electrically to finish off with Elmore James Talk To Me Baby, a bit of Hound Dog, Teenage Kicks, before finishing with Brand New Cadillac. Having played for most of the afternoon, Thundersticks was rested, and DILFs Martin Hunter-Wyatt stepped in, and a big thanks has to be given to both Pete and Martin of DILF, who today gave us the essence of what EYC is all about. They turned up without their band, without any preconceptions, and just said “can we do anything to help?” Thats the fantastic attitude of all of the musicians who support the EYC. Mick Sadler supported by John Thornewill finished the whole afternoon off with an acoustic version of Foottapper (along with some inappropriate percussion by some people who, quite frankly, should know better. You know who you are) Respect to all the musicians today, and a big thanks to all the people who came along and supported. See y’all next time at EYC – the most fun you can have on a Sunday afternoon with your clothes on.
