Each man acts according to his culture and values. What is important is each must adhere to norms of civilised behaviour. A system that focuses on the rights of criminals to the exclusion of the rights of victims must endure the consequences. Our human rights activists and extreme political fringe elements survive because of this bias. How do we deal with criminal tendencies, corrupt practices, degenerating habits, deviant behaviour, appallingly low standards of morality? We have one fit all approach. A combination of approaches -law, counselling, medical treatment, compulsory physical training in school and colleges, banning of political activities in schools and colleges, bringing in a more equitable distribution of wealth, accepting values in self regulation. Arm chair advisors like me may dream of an ideal world where all including women enjoy safe environment but we do not consider what needs to be done. We wake up when Uber type incidents happen. If immediate society is alert, this could have been averted. So too drug and drink menace. We deserve a better place to live in. Are we doing our bit?
