Each night before I lay me down to sleep, I write a poem. Often this poem is in the form of a Haiku. The video below inspired this Haiku. On the Clearwater Friends come together And create a symphony With hearts full of joy. O.K. - youve forgotten how to write a Haiku. If I may, let me give you a refresher on Haiku poetry, in the hope that youll participate in the spirit of Pete Seeger and contribute your own Haiku! Haiku are short poems that use sensory language to capture a feeling or image. They are often inspired by an element of nature, a moment of beauty or a poignant experience. Haiku poetry was originally developed by Japanese poets, and the form was adapted to English and other languages by poets in other countries. The Sound Structure of Japanese of Haiku Japanese Haiku traditionally consist of 17 on, or sounds, divided into three phrases: 5 sounds, 7 sounds, and 5 sounds. English poets interpreted on as syllables. For example, the following is a Haiku poem about a dear friend. Pete Not being with Pete (5 syllables) Does not mean he is distant (7 syllables) Pete lives in our hearts. (5 syllables) This Haiku is about a special place.
