#Each_One_Of_You_READ_pls! #My_Story! That was the time when I was a class 8 student. In my school, there was a trend that once in a month or two, the principal used to find time and make a visit to all the classes. He used to take feedback about the teachers, courses. Then at the end, he used to give some inspirational speeches. Basically, it all used to be real fun. So, one day, he came to our class to motivate us. He gave us some really inspirational lectures, and told us many thought provoking stories. To motivate us even more, he asked us one question, What do you want to be in your life? Each one of us was supposed to stand up and answer. As you would answer, the principal would discuss about your goal for one minute, and then the class would start clapping. Before my turn came up, about 10-15 guys had already answered. Most of them wanted to be a Scientist, some wanted to be a Doctor, and one wanted to be a Businessman. Sir, I dont know what I want to be, but I like studying Mathematics. I answered. And within a moment, everyone present inside the class, including the principal was laughing. You dont even know what you want to be? Hahaha! Sit down, sit down. Next guy stand up. Said the principal, laughing. I sat down, awestruck and dumbfound. I felt bad. It was so embarrassing. It has been seven years now and I am yet to figure out why everyone laughed. All that time I was taught only one thing. Study hard, and score good marks. And thats exactly what I was doing. I didnt know why was I studying, but I was told that studying is good. And thats exactly why I was doing what I liked. I knew nothing about different scopes of studies. I knew nothing about different career fields. Basically, I knew nothing. I was Jon Snow. So, how was I supposed to know what I want to be in my life at that point of time?! But as time has passed, Ive learnt one thing. The embarrassment that day, and the reason behind it wasnt just random or arbitrary. It had something in it. The more I think about that incident, the more I realize how goal-less and fault-full our Education system is. We put our kids into schools not because we want them to be educated, but because we believe education has safer career options. No, Im not opposing this. As a parent its okay and completely logical to be worried about your kids career. What irks me out is the fact that good careers in our India only mean Engineers, Doctors and IAS officers. We always tell them to study hard and score good marks in exams. Our kids, unaware of what is going to happen to them by what they are doing, keep doing the hard work with books, for no known reason whatsoever. They pass primary classes, and then classes 8, 9 and 10. And then for class 10 students, weve made some really great rules. If youll score good in Class 10, youll get Science. If youll score little less, youll get Commerce. If youll score bad, youll end up with Humanities or Arts. Where goes that What do you want to be? at that time? What if someone who scored 50% wants to study Science? May be it were Humanities subjects due to which he ended up scoring 50%. What if someone who scored 95% wants to study Arts? Maybe it were always the arts courses that motivated him to study. The students pursue different courses, based on their marks and not on their interest. But what if Chess interests him more than Science? What if he sings better than he mugs up History? What if he has a good sense of humor and not a good IQ? What if he likes to paint rather than writing pages full of answers on exam sheets? What if by the time he passes class 12th with Mathematics stream, he realizes he doesnt want to be an Engineer but wants to be a Doctor? Theres no answer to these questions. If any such What if happens, theres no coming back. Nothing can be done then. If youre passing Class 12 with Mathematics stream, you HAVE to be an Engineer, otherwise your life is ‘screwed. And the truth is, these What if happen quite frequently. People end up taking Engineering in colleges, and then a job just for the sake of it, while all they wanted to be in their life was something else. And thats how, quite frequently, we end up screwing the future of our own kids in the name of a safer future. - Armitunum Credits: Inside IIT Taken From: The Logical Indian!
