Earlier this morning, I was at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach, FL. I photographed this Purple Swamphen - a new species for me to see and to photograph. The Purple Swamphen was introduced to North America in the late 1990s due to avicultural escapes in the Pembroke Pines, FL, area. State wildlife biologists attempted to eradicate the birds, but they have multiplied and can now be found in many areas of southern Florida. It was added to the American Birding Association checklist in February 2013. These Florida birds are mostly or entirely of the gray-headed race poliocephalus, native to the area around the Caspian Sea. Nikon D810 with 400 mm lens & 1.7x TC, ISO 4000, f/5.6, 1/640 s, tripod.
