Earlier this year European politicians made the momentous decision - TopicsExpress

Earlier this year European politicians made the momentous decision to end over-fishing and rebuild fish stocks. This success was in no small part due to the supporters of the Irish Wildlife Trust and other environmental organisations which campaigned for this outcome over 4 years. Unfortunately the fight is not over! On October 23rd next MEPs will decide the fate of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) which is the way in which public money is given to the fishing sector. For years tax payers money has fueled overfishing through subsidising new boats and more fishing power, when what was needed was the opposite. The IWT has joined our partners in OCEAN2012 in writing to all of Irelands MEPs asking them to support an EMFF that gathers better data on fish populations and stronger enforcement of existing rules. Much progress has been made in reversing the decline in the health of our seas and MEPs must not jeopardise this by doling out more public money for bigger boats.
