Earlier today Engine 53-1 and Tanker 53, along with units from the New Danville and Willow Street Fire Companies and Southern Regional Police Department of Lancaster County, responded to a fire alarm at the Conestoga Elementary School. Units arrived to find the school evacuated. The alarm was determined to be caused by smoke from a neighbors controlled burn entering the school. Personnel walked the school and checked all rooms. After the school was determined to be safe we went outside with the school principal and advised the students of what happened and that everything was OK. We then praised them for a perfect evacuation and remaining calm. We were then given a standing ovation and loud thank you from the students. As the children returned to the school we were given high fives and even some hugs. Thanks to the staff at Conestoga, you obviously take fire safety seriously and everything worked as it should today.
