Early in February (weather depending) will see 3 of the trees - TopicsExpress

Early in February (weather depending) will see 3 of the trees removed on Court street for safety and Tree management reasons. One of the Elm trees thats opposite the Bank of Scotland, and 2 of the smaller Rowan Trees outside the Corn Exchange are coming down. Mike Foy, the Councils Tree Officer, writes - The two younger Rowan trees in the grills are definately being replaced. I am really hoping we can replace the larger one opposite the Bank of Scotland but it will depend if we can get enough of the stump out. There are often services under the trees that mean we cant dig far enough down. I will be trying though. The line of younger trees behind the line of old ones were put in years ago to pre-empt the eventual removal of the old trees. The attached photos show the Trees through the years. Its interesting to note that there appeared to be a line of Elm(?) trees planted all along Court Street in the early days, and the photo collection shows several replacements of the ones outside the Corn Exchange as the area has been redeveloped over the years. 1st photo was taken circa early 1900, pre 1909 as theres no Post Office yet. Also note the raised road gutters and the cobbled road. This also clearly shows the line of Elm(?) trees. 2nd photo was taken mid 1950s - some great cars in this photo. 3rd photo taken early 1970s going by the car styles. 4th photo was taken circa 1980s and shows how they planted trees in those days. Look how under developed the area outside the Corn Exchange was back then. (John Hamilton, Admin)
